A Fistful of Flower Seeds

Watch a child discover, with wonder, a flower which has sprouted from the ground. Ask a child to draw a garden, it is likely the child will draw flowers. As this story unfolds, a little boy learns what flower seeds need to grow. He also learns that there is a saint named, The Little Flower, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. She loved flowers too, just like the little boy. She saw God in all creation and she wrote about the beauty of nature and all the different kinds of flowers. As you read this story, may you see the wonder in the garden of your life.

  • Saint Thérèse of Lisieux is a beloved saint who lived a simple life of loving Our Lord in everything she did! She wrote about how God opened the book of nature to her. She saw how every flower He created has a beauty of its own. She also wrote that God looks at the "world of souls" He created as His "living garden" and that He wants us to become saints.

  • The story was inspired when I was teaching my Kindergarten class. During the springtime one day, I read the Scripture:

Matthew 13:3-8 "A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”

The children had so much fun "acting out" the Scripture as the seeds, the birds, the rocky ground, the sun, the thorns, the rich soil. This led to a beautiful unit learning about planting flower seeds. I wrote this children's story and read it to the class. One of my students, Ethan, asked me to put the story into a book. You can see him, here, holding the book!

  • The artwork from the book was done by my granddaughter Norah who loves flowers and taking pictures of them. I am so grateful for her collaboration with the cover design and photographs that make the story so beautiful!
